Milla Virtanen & Jaakko Toivonen: Blackpool

Directed to your seat around a small pop-up swimming pool by an androgynous dinner-suited figure in a plastic wig, my curiosity was well and truly piqued. What followed was just under 60 minutes of surprise, joy, sadness and fabulous dancing punctuated by a manic cheesy grin.
– Hugh Jones, Brighton Fringe 2018
It takes a while to work out where this high-tempo tornado is going, but the thrill of the chase is worth keeping up with across the course of what seems like a cathartic experience for its stars. Milla Virtanen and Jaakko Toivonen have travelled extensively to research the history of their art, and Blackpool is these Finnish dancers’ homage to the world of professional dancing and its dark underbelly.
– Ben Miller, Brighton Source 2018
Dance performance Blackpool takes the audience on a journey into the tough world of competitive dance and unveils the raw truth behind the glamour. The show, with its elements of drama and dark humour, is a biographical and intimate theatre-experience. Old, already long healed wounds are reopened, in a self-taunting and uncesored manner.
