Edith Södergran – Vierge Moderne is a performance about Edith Södergran a pioneer of Nordic modernist poetry.

Mezzosoprano Essi Luttinen singer and the music is composed by the workgroup Ooppera Skaala. Janne Lehmusvuo is the director of the show. Working with the team is electronic music composers and producers Antti Rasi and Janne Storms. Dance choreographer Minttu Pietilä uses strong body language switching between two sides of Edith, reality and illusion.

The music is completely electronic and mainly programmed in advance but complemented with improvisation that reacts to the background music in the shows livesituations.

The electronic music takes impression from industrial music and uses it to contrast the passionate and intellectual world of the poetry. Together they create a strict grid for the wide circular vocal lines strongly tying the music to a modern time. In the music we hear typical electronic minimalism and strict rhythm, and the ethereal arias which get their symbolic vision from the poems of Södergran. The arias refer to the turn of the century post-romantic orkesterlied-tradition but from a modern perspective. Contemporary 3D-technology enables a strong visual world that combines the last centuries early national romantic style with Russian belle epoque.
